Phoebe Littlejohn
Hello, my name is Phoebe Littlejohn and this is my portfolio for the District Authority Award (Dogwood) scholarship application.
I am a grade 12 student at Surrey Christian School and am of African-American and Jamaican heritage. I love making music even more than listening to it and my ethnic and religious backgrounds deeply influence my performance.
My scholarship focus area is: Popular Music (Jazz and Contemporary). I currently sing, play violin and piano, and compose. Music has given me a way to contribute to - and navigate - the Surrey Christian School community.
The videos and pictures in this portfolio show the different ways in which I express my musical gifts, showcasing my work as a:
Singer / Songwriter
Live Performer
Violinist
Musical Cast Member
Worship Leader
Singer / Songwriter
This is a lyric video for a song I performed, produced, and composed. The song is called “Intentions,” and is about me exploring the purpose of my singing, ultimately giving glory to God. My goal is to sing to the best of my ability while balancing confidence with humility.
Live Performer
Christmas is a big deal in my family. We start listening to Christmas music in October! Here is a video of me singing one of my favorite Christmas tunes, “This Christmas” by Donny Hathaway, performed at my school’s 2023 Christmas gala.
Violinist
As a budding violinist I have taken private lessons, participated in orchestras, performed on recitals, completed two RCM exams, and attended summer music camps. This is a video from a summer music camp I attended last summer called the Thrive City String Boot Camp. I was in the intermediate-advanced violin class and learned the piece featured in the video (“Tambourin” by Mondonville) in only 5 days! It was a challenge but I enjoyed it.
Musical Cast Member
This school year I tried my hand at acting for the first time. I auditioned and joined the cast of a musical presented by my high school called “Hunger Games (The Musical).” I learned a lot about being part of a cast, learning choreography, memorizing lyrics, and balancing a busy rehearsal schedule with my other responsibilities. Overall, it was a rewarding experience and I’m grateful that I had a chance to take part!
Worship Leader
I love creating and sharing music with others. It means even more when I get to use my gifts to worship God. This is a picture of me leading worship during a recent Friday chapel at my school. I’m singing alongside my brother Jasper and one of my teachers, Mr. Alvaro. I also lead worship with my dad on Sunday mornings at my church in Surrey, BC.
